Abstract
The major purpose of this study is to identify factors that cause caregiving burden among family caregivers. The primary caregivers were divided by two age groups based on their aging stages. Factors associated with caregiving burden were analyzed by age group, finally 331 of the caregivers were participated in this study. Care receivers were older adults who belonged to 1 through 3 grade in National Long-Term Care Insurance Plan. They have received day care or home help services. The identified independent variables to affect caregiving burden were general characteristics of frail elderly and their primary caregivers, caregiving conditions, social support, life satisfaction, and satisfaction with the provided service. The age group differences among the primary caregivers present two additional results. First, for the caregivers, who were more than 60-years-old, the following factors were positively associated with caregiving burden: longer period of caregiving, severe level of cognitive disorder among care receivers, lack of emotional support, and lower level of fulfillment in psycho-emotional support. Second, younger age and frequent occurrence of behavior problem among the frail elderly were more likely to increase caregiving burden among the caregivers who were less than 60-years-old. The higher level of caregiving burden was replicated when the caregivers perceived that informational support, life satisfaction, and service satisfaction were insufficient. Finally, our findings suggest that several policy and practical measures are necessary to ensure the quality of life for the primary caregivers. Specifically, the measures are expanding long-term care benefit coverages, establishing the entire supportive networks for the primary caregivers, service standardization, and introduction of public certification system.
